Hollyoaks: Dee Dee pushes back against Abigail’s school-play pressure

Hollyoaks is set to put Dee Dee under fresh pressure as Abigail becomes determined to steer her towards the leading role in the school play – but the teenager appears to have very different ideas about being in the spotlight.

New preview material for the episodes airing from Monday 9 to Wednesday 11 November places the school at the centre of several developing stories. While Sienna Blake faces questions during a job interview, Dee Dee finds herself dealing with expectations from Abigail as auditions approach.

Abigail wants Dee Dee to take the lead

Abigail is enthusiastic about the upcoming school production and wants Dee Dee to audition for the main role. The problem is that Dee Dee does not share that enthusiasm.

Rather than being excited by the opportunity, she is uncomfortable with the pressure being placed on her. That difference between what Abigail wants and what Dee Dee actually wants gives the storyline a clear point of tension before the auditions have even begun.

The situation matters because Abigail’s influence over Dee Dee has already caused concern. Recent episodes have shown Nancy becoming increasingly suspicious of Abigail’s behaviour, particularly after a safeguarding meeting prompted a defensive response.

The school play therefore becomes more than a simple extracurricular activity. It creates another situation in which Dee Dee has to decide whether to follow Abigail’s wishes or assert control over her own choices.

Trina impresses when auditions begin

When the auditions take place, Trina delivers a strong performance and makes an immediate impression.

Dee Dee takes a very different approach. Instead of trying to compete for the starring role Abigail wants for her, she deliberately damages her own chances.

That decision suggests Dee Dee is looking for a way to escape the expectations surrounding her without necessarily confronting Abigail directly. By sabotaging her audition, she can avoid the lead role while appearing simply to have performed badly.

It is a small act of resistance, but one that could become important if Abigail realises what she has done.

Nancy’s concerns are already growing

Abigail’s pressure over the play comes at a difficult time for her position at the school.

Nancy has already had reason to question her conduct. During a recent safeguarding meeting, Abigail initially feared that concerns had been raised about her relationship with Dee Dee. The meeting was actually connected to Beth’s worries following Maddox’s injury, but Abigail’s defensive reaction left Nancy uneasy.

That means her behaviour towards Dee Dee is now taking place under greater scrutiny than before. If Nancy notices that the teenager is being pushed towards choices she does not want, it could add to the questions she is already asking.

The preview material does not confirm that Nancy discovers the full extent of the situation during these episodes, but the school setting brings the key characters into closer proximity.

The school becomes a major Hollyoaks setting

Dee Dee’s audition is not the only source of tension at the school during the week.

Tony Hutchinson encourages Nancy to interview Sienna for a vacant personal assistant role, hoping a new job will give Sienna something productive to focus on. That interview also becomes awkward when Abigail questions Sienna about her criminal history.

The overlap is interesting because Abigail is simultaneously challenging an adult applicant while attempting to direct Dee Dee’s choices. It gives Nancy several opportunities to observe how Abigail interacts with the people around her.

For Sienna, the interview is about whether her past will prevent her from moving forward. For Dee Dee, the auditions are about whether she can make a decision for herself when someone else has already decided what she should do.

Will Dee Dee’s quiet rebellion have consequences?

Deliberately sabotaging an audition may solve Dee Dee’s immediate problem, but it is unlikely to settle the wider conflict.

If Abigail expected her to win the lead role, she may question why the performance went wrong. Trina’s successful audition could also intensify the situation if Abigail sees another student receiving the attention she wanted for Dee Dee.

The larger question is whether Dee Dee will continue finding indirect ways to resist or eventually tell someone how she feels about the pressure surrounding her.

Nancy’s growing suspicions mean there is at least one adult at the school beginning to look more closely at Abigail’s behaviour. Whether that is enough to change the situation remains to be seen.

Hollyoaks airs new episodes from Monday to Wednesday, with the 9–11 November episodes bringing the school play auditions and Dee Dee’s attempt to take back some control.
