Spoiler warning: This article reveals the result of the 3 November 2026 episode of The Great British Bake Off.
The Great British Bake Off has lost another much-loved contestant just before the quarter-final. Gary, the 67-year-old retired garment technologist from Nottinghamshire, became the seventh baker to leave the tent after Free From Party Week. The result means just five contestants remain in the competition, with Gabe celebrating a very different outcome after being named Star Baker.
Gary misses out on a quarter-final place
Tuesday’s episode challenged the remaining bakers to make treats without some of the ingredients many home cooks rely upon. The theme was Free From Party Week, with gluten-free, dairy-free and vegan bakes taking centre stage. The judges wanted creativity and impressive flavour, not merely recipes that satisfied dietary restrictions.
It was a demanding week for Gary. Channel 4’s official account of the episode confirms that he was the baker eliminated, with Alison Hammond delivering the news after Noel Fielding announced Gabe as Star Baker.
Gary’s departure is particularly poignant because he had never expected to make it so far. In his exit interview, he explained that his original ambition was simply to reach the third week. Instead, he survived seven episodes and came within touching distance of the quarter-final.
Why was Free From Week so difficult?
Gary admitted that this was not a style of baking he had practised much at home. The programme’s challenges required contestants to rethink familiar textures and techniques while still producing the kind of spectacular party food expected in the tent.
During the signature challenge, Gary made a chocolate-and-pastry caterpillar inspired by supermarket birthday cakes. According to a detailed episode recap, the judges enjoyed elements of the flavour but found that his gluten-free pastry lacked the required folds.
The technical challenge brought another test. Bakers had to produce animal-shaped vegan cakes, and Gary’s axolotl creation struggled with uneven finishing and buttercream problems. His fifth-place result left him vulnerable heading into the showstopper.
His final cake, a gluten-free witch’s cauldron, made a strong visual impression but was let down by its texture. With the competition tightening, the judges ultimately chose to send him home.
Gabe celebrates a Star Baker breakthrough
While Gary faced disappointment, Gabe enjoyed a breakthrough. Channel 4 confirmed that he earned the Star Baker title for the seventh episode, giving him a boost ahead of the quarter-final.
The contrast illustrates the pressure of the closing stages. A baker can have a difficult day even after weeks of solid work, while another can seize the opportunity to demonstrate new strengths. With fewer contestants remaining, each decision becomes more consequential.
There were positive moments elsewhere in the tent, too. Reports from the episode describe Mo earning a coveted Hollywood Handshake during the signature challenge and producing an imaginative gluten-free showstopper. Moyin also impressed the judges, while Tom narrowly missed out on the top accolade.
Gary reflects on his time in the tent
Gary did not leave bitterly. In Channel 4’s official exit interview, he said he was proud of how far he had come and spoke warmly about the friendships he had made. He recalled the encouragement of the other bakers, who gathered for a group hug after the elimination.
His highlights included receiving praise from Paul Hollywood and taking on a playful temporary judging role during an earlier episode. Hollywood also joked about the pair’s similar appearance and their habit of wearing shirts in matching colours.
Gary described the experience as one of the best of his life. He left with his apron, water bottle and plenty of memories, and said he intended to carry on baking.
The retired garment technologist discovered his enthusiasm for baking later in life, after buying a cookbook roughly five years ago. His progress through the competition may resonate with viewers who have taken up a creative hobby later than expected.
Who is still in The Great British Bake Off 2026?
Five contestants remain: Connie, Gabe, Mo, Moyin and Tom. They now face the quarter-final, when there will be even less room for a disappointing bake.
The next episode is scheduled for Tuesday 10 November at 8pm on Channel 4. It is Caramel Week, featuring a treacle tart, millionaire shortbread and a nougatine sculpture showpiece, according to the episode guide.
For Gary, the contest has ended. For those still in the tent, the race for a place in the semi-final is only getting tougher.
