Director Andy Muschietti and producer Barbara Muschietti are speaking out about the decision to kill off Rich (Arian S. Cartaya) as he shared an incredibly tender and sweet moment with his childhood crush Marge (Matilda Lawler).
They spoke in a new interview about how they knew a major character would have to die in the Black Spot fire, given that it’s such a huge moment in the history of Derry.
They eventually landed on Rich.
“We were trying to figure out who. We knew that somebody had to go. That was an important thing. We just didn’t know who it was going to be, and everybody was on the table,” producer Barbara Muschietti told The Wrap.
Andy added, “Rich is like this character that is so pure and innocent and so full of life. It’s the tragic element, you know, of great love stories, like ‘Titanic,’ or ‘Romeo and Juliet’ or ‘Doctor Zhivago,’ where this beautiful love story just doesn’t have a great end … Everybody loves him. So it’s hard, but the kid had to go.”
